I lived in French Polynesia for 4 years, and as /u/Megatron_McLargeHuge said, you can get a more authentic and cheaper experience on some of the other atols. That said I did go to Bora and it is amazing, I’m not sure if there are pensions there but there are some hotels that are cheaper than others definitely (I stayed in the Maitai hotel which was the cheapest at the time and it was already more than satisfactory for my standards). My ultimate recommendation would be to go to Fakarava, to the south pass, there is a pension there called Tetamanu and THAT is the ultimate island experience. Ultimately if you’re going to be laying down the cash to do this, I’d say that you might as well visit a couple different islands, as staying around 3 or 4 days in one will already allow you to see everything there is to see, and the pricy ticket is to get there, but to fly from one island to another it is relatively affordable.
